Nosaltres, els sudistes, que constituïm un dels pobles més virtuosos, il·lustrats i poderosos que existeixen avui sobre la terra, no havíem sabut apreciar-nos fins ara. Mai podrà el Nord dominar el Sud.
Per conèixer les idees sobre les quals es sustentava el racisme i l’esclavitud al Sud dels Estats Units en l’època de la Guerra de Secessió, aportem el text d’un sudista:
«Havíem proposat reprendre el tràfic de negres, però no va ser possible obtenir l’autorització del Congrés. Vam pensar llavors annexionar-nos Mèxic i Centreamèrica, per assegurar així una ruta neutral a la importació d’esclaus. Si no podíem fer-ho pacíficament, ho hauríem fet per la força. Déu ha creat els negres amb l’únic propòsit de tallar la llenya i portar l’aigua dels blancs. Nosaltres, els sudistes, que constituïm un dels pobles més virtuosos, il·lustrats i poderosos que existeixen avui sobre la terra, no havíem sabut apreciar-nos fins ara. Mai podrà el Nord dominar el Sud. Si l’amor a la pàtria no li impedeix persistir en la seva actitud, l’amor al treball i al cotó el rendirà. L’esclavitud dels negres està justificada per la Bíblia, les consideracions humanitàries i la sana filosofia.»
El text ens sembla interessant per a l’objectiu que ens proposem perquè recull una sèrie d’idees sobre l’actitud i els valors dels sudistes als Estats Units:
- Una crida a l’orgull del Sud quan s’expressa que és un dels pobles més virtuosos de la Terra, però que hauria estat oblidat pels propis sudistes fins a aquell moment. Aquest orgull es relaciona amb l’afirmació rotunda que el Nord mai podria dominar el Sud. El text és una reafirmació dels suposats valors sudistes en un moment clau, el de l’enfrontament amb el Nord.
- Una voluntat imperial, quan es parla de les possibles annexions d’altres territoris americans.
- La justificació de l’esclavitud dels negres basada en aspectes religiosos i/o tradicionals, així com en un suposat humanitarisme.
El text s’ha consultat del manual d’Història Contemporània de COU d’Antonio Fernández, un clàssic que continua essent imprescindible pel valor dels seus continguts, malgrat el temps transcorregut.
