En la revista Pelayos del 14 de marzo de 1937, en plena guerra, se podía leer la siguiente consigna:
«¡Guerra a las novelas, sean las que sean! Paso a la verdadera historia, sobre todo la Historia de España. Si tengo alguna novela, la entregaré a mi padre, y le pediré que me compre una buena historia de España. La novela, además de hacer perder el tiempo, excita las pasiones. La historia instruye, educa y forma buenos patriotas«
Este texto es muy interesante porque en unas pocas frases nos aporta una parte fundamental de la filosofía escolar de la primera hora del franquismo. La literatura es considerada perniciosa porque excitaría las pasiones. El nuevo hombre y la nueva mujer debían ser sobrios y austeros, decididos servidores del nuevo orden y de la patria, además de excelentes católicos. Por otro lado, las novelas hacían perder el tiempo, y había que realizar una tarea fundamental: vencer al enemigo «rojo» y construir la nueva España.
En cambio, historia sí es una lectura adecuada para los chicos, pero, especialmente, la española y que estuviera bien escrita, es decir, se supone que desde la perspectiva franquista. El conocimiento de la Historia de España era fundamental porque permitiría la formación de patriotas, es decir era una Historia al servicio de un acusado nacionalismo español y para la que se denominaba Nueva España.
