Hay días en que las islas amanecen con una sed antigua. No es solo la de los barrancos, que se miran a sí mismos como viejos espejos sin agua, ni la de los campos que esperan una nube con la paciencia de quien ya ha aprendido a perder. Es otra sed, más honda: la de un territorio que se pregunta cuánto puede dar sin dejar de ser.
Canarias vive —otra vez— en el centro de una conversación incómoda. Las cifras del turismo vuelven a batir récords mientras el cielo se vuelve tacaño y la tierra recuerda su condición volcánica: dura, porosa, bella y frágil. El contraste es casi literario. Aviones que llegan como estrofas repetidas, piscinas que brillan como metáforas de abundancia, y al fondo, silencioso, el interior que se vacía y observa.
No se trata de demonizar al visitante. El viajero, como el lector, llega buscando algo que no tiene. Pero las islas, que siempre han sabido acoger, empiezan a preguntarse por el precio de esa hospitalidad cuando el agua se desala a contrarreloj y la vivienda se convierte en un lujo ajeno. La actualidad no grita: murmura. Y ese murmullo se parece mucho al de las mareas largas, las que acaban dejando huella.
En los pueblos del interior —los que no salen en los folletos— la conversación es otra. Se habla del aljibe, de la huerta mínima, del hijo que se fue a trabajar a la costa y del abuelo que recuerda cuando el monte todavía retenía humedad. Allí la literatura nace sola: cada frase es memoria, cada silencio una pregunta. ¿Cómo sostener el mañana sin vender el ayer?
Canarias ha sido siempre frontera: entre continentes, entre vientos, entre promesas. Hoy la frontera es ética. No es una cuestión de cifras, sino de ritmo. ¿A qué velocidad puede vivir una isla sin perder su respiración? Quizá la respuesta esté en volver a mirar despacio: en entender que el paisaje no es un decorado, sino un texto que se escribe con agua, tiempo y cuidado.
La actualidad pasará —siempre pasa—, pero quedará la necesidad de un relato compartido. Uno donde el progreso no sea una palabra hueca y la identidad no se congele en postal. Un relato donde el turismo aprenda a leer el territorio que pisa y donde las islas, por fin, puedan beber sin miedo.
Porque la sed de Canarias no se calma solo con lluvias: se calma con decisiones que sepan escuchar. Y escuchar, en estas islas, siempre ha sido una forma de amar.
